Individual's equipment

Each competitor must wear or carry as appropriate on the Hike:

  • Substantial footwear/boots (not trainers) and socks suitable for walking or scrambling that support the ankle; Experienced hill-walkers may wear fell-running footwear.
  • Long trousers (not jeans). Lighter type trousers (with additional thermal wear) or shorts can be worn if the weather conditions permit.
  • Waterproof (not shower-proof) over-garment with hood
  • Waterproof over trousers
  • Sweater with long sleeves or other warm body garment with high thermal properties.
  • Spare sweater/alternative.
  • Gloves
  • Headgear
  • Reflectors or safety tapes (visible from front & rear).
  • Mug
  • Water Bottle/Bladder (minimum 1 litre)

All the above clothing must be of the correct size, in good repair, of suitable material and which in the view of the organisers are capable of providing adequate thermal insulation and protection from conditions to be expected on down land in winter.

  • Whistle
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Substantial torch capable of prolonged use
  • Spare torch (or spare batteries/bulb for main torch)
  • Adequate emergency rations (sweets, chocolate nuts etc)

  • Pencil and notebook
  • A copy of the written instructions to competitors.
  • Their hiker tally card issued to them at check-in
